Regenerative Therapy Q & A

How do platelets promote healing?

Along with red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma, platelets are a natural constituent of your blood. When injured, platelets immediately travel to the damaged tissues and do two things: They stop the bleeding and activate healing.

When platelets arrive at injured tissues, they release proteins called growth factors. There are many different growth factors, and each one triggers specific aspects of healing.

To give you a few examples, growth factors may stimulate new blood vessels, build a matrix to support new tissue growth, or accelerate healing. Growth factors from platelets also regulate inflammation as they regenerate new tissues.

What should I know about platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

PRP is blood plasma that contains a concentrated number of platelets. Dr. Badiyan makes PRP in the office by drawing a sample of your blood and processing it in a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the different blood components, making it easy to extract the platelets and a small amount of plasma. Then Dr. Badiyan immediately injects your PRP at the site of your injury, where the extra boost of platelets accelerates healing.
